CHAPTER 19
Annie woke up the next morning feeling like it was going to be a great day. It had been such an amazing night, the morning after had to be good, right? She and Weston had finished the movie while theyâd eaten their easy dessert. Once it was over and the ice cream remaining in the bowls had melted, Annie knew it was time to go. If she stayed, she knew she wouldnât be able to just fall asleep next to Weston. The whole talk about baking pies had gotten her going, and just sitting next to Weston after that had been difficult. At the door, Weston hadnât kissed her goodnight how Annie had hoped she would. Annie knew she couldâve leaned in and kissed her, but when Weston took her hand and kissed the back of her palm instead, Annie knew Weston was taking things slowly for her. Annie had kissed Weston on the cheek. Sheâd lingered, and had nearly connected their lips, but sheâd respected what Weston was attempting to do; let them take their time with this part.
âAnnie?â
âHuh?â Annie asked.
âAre you drooling right now?â Aubrey asked her.
âWhat? No.â But Annie touched her chin just in case. âIâm not drooling.â Thankfully, she wasnât.
âIâve been talking for, like, five minutes. Have you heard anything Iâve said?â
âNot really, no.â
âWhatâs going on? Is this more crap about you not liking my ideas and the business changing?â
âNo,â she replied honestly.
Then, her phone buzzed. Annie looked down at the screen as it vibrated on the glass table and smiled. It was Weston leaving her a text. After Annie had said goodnight, the driver Weston had hired had taken her home, and Annie had messaged that sheâd arrived safely. Theyâd talked on the phone for an hour after that, and when Annie finally said she needed to go to sleep, Weston had asked if she was really going to sleep or if she was going to bake a pie.
âWhatâs going on?â Aubrey asked.
âNothing. I just got a message.â
âThatâs making you light up like a Christmas tree? I donât think Iâve seen you in that shade of red since you farted in church when we wereââ
âOkay. Thatâs unnecessary,â Annie interrupted.
âOh⦠Itâs a girl, isnât it?â Aubrey asked, leaning forward and turning the phone in order to see the message. âWhy is Weston asking you about pies and rolling pins?â
Annie cleared her throat and turned her phone back around, slipping it into the pocket of her slacks.
âWe talked about food the other day,â she lied.
Aubrey leaned back and stared at her contemplatively.
âTalon hasnât called me. Should I be offended?â
âWhat? I thought you wanted a one-time thing.â
âI did, but they usually call after or at least text to see if Iâd be interested in a repeat,â Aubrey said.
âI think she got the message that you wouldnât be interested in a repeat.â
âHow do you know that?â
âWhat? I donât know that. Iâm justââ
âHave you seen Talon lately?â
âWhy are we talking about Talon?â Annie asked.
âIâm just curious. Have you seen her?â
âYes, I saw her once.
